The 9/11 Memorial is located at 1000 Texan Trail in Grapevine, Texas. Artist/sculptor Dean Thompson worked with a team of volunteers for more than 3 years to complete this Flight Crew Memorial. This memorial honors the heroism of the 33 flight crew members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The Grapevine memorial honors these fallen heroes through powerful symbolism. At its highest point stands a bronze airline captain, representing the ultimate responsibility of protecting passengers, fellow crew members, and the aircraft itself. The captain points west—the direction in which the flights lost on September 11 were traveling. An eagle in flight, our national symbol of freedom, soars westward as well, representing both American Airlines and United Airlines, whose aircraft were tragically taken that day. A child figure symbolizes the millions of families worldwide that flight crews faithfully serve each day. The back-to-back positioning of the flight attendant and the cockpit crew reflects the teamwork and unity essential to every flight. Together, these elements form a moving tribute to courage, service, and sacrifice. We will never forget!
