The 9/11 Memorial is located at 1000 Texan Trail in Grapevine, Texas. Artist/sculptor Dean Thompson worked for more than three years with a team of volunteers to complete this Flight Crew Memorial. This memorial honors the heroism of the 33 flight crew members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The airline captain in this bronze monument stands at the tallest point representing his responsibility of protecting passengers, fellow crewmembers, and the aircraft. The captain is pointing west, the direction the flights we lost were traveling that day. The in-flight eagle, a national symbol of freedom, represents both airlines - American and United that lost flights that day. The eagle is also depicted flying west. The child represents the many family members that flight crews serve globally on a daily basis. The back-to-back placement of the flight attendants and the cockpit crew represents the teamwork of all flight crews. This impressive memorial honors the flight crewmembers who lost their lives on a day we will never forget!
