Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine presented Grapevine Police Officer Brandon Phifer and Officer Steven Velez with the EMS Super Star Award for saving the life of a Colleyville woman.
The patient’s husband got her to the front entrance of the hospital, but the door was on the opposite side of the building from the Emergency Room, and he could not determine exactly where he was to seek help from doctors. He was also unable to move his wife inside for medical attention. Dispatcher Lisa Merz kept the woman’s husband calm, and talked him through CPR.
Grapevine firefighters were working a major structure fire at the time, and Officers Phifer and Velez were first on the scene. They immediately took over CPR until paramedics from Southlake and Euless arrived.
The use of CPR and other actions by paramedics kept the woman alive and viable for surgery. She is now recovering at home, and was able to thank her heroes in person at the award presentation at the hospital. Great job by all parties involved, and special thanks to Baylor for recognizing the incredible teamwork by so many different agencies!
