HAZARDOUS WASTE
What is Hazardous Waste? Simply defined, a hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) www.epa.gov manages the criteria for determining whether or not a waste is hazardous. The material will either be listed as hazardous with the EPA or exhibit hazardous characteristics like Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity, or Toxicity.
A Hazardous Waste that is around all of us every day is HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) which includes things like paint, gasoline, yard chemicals, and oils. You will find these items under the kitchen sink or stored in the garage. It is illegal to dispose of some of these items in the trash, pour them down the sink or dump them into storm drains. Options are available. As a Grapevine resident, you may properly dispose of these and other items at the Environmental Collection Center. For more information call (817) 871-5257. The center is open year round Thursday through Saturday. Please be prepared to present a driver’s license or a copy of your utility bill to prove you are a Grapevine Resident. In addition to having access to the Environmental Collection Center all year long, the City of Grapevine Public Works Department typically holds a HHW event in June each year. The HHW event is subject to budgetary constraints. For information on the next scheduled event, CLICK HERE
One of the easiest ways to determine whether or not a material is hazardous is to read the label or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). If a material is a mixture of different products then review the MSDS’s for all of the products. For more information on MSDS, click here http://www.osha.gov
