How do you become an Explorer?
If you are interested in joining an exciting, rewarding program and are looking for a future in law enforcement, contact the Grapevine Police Department at 817-410-3204 and ask for the Explorer Advisor. You may also come by to one of the weekly meetings, which are held on most Tuesdays at 6:30 pm in the Grapevine Police Department Training Room at 307 West Dallas Road, Grapevine Texas 76051.


What is Exploring?
The Grapevine Police Department Law Enforcement Explorer Post is a part of the program called Learning for Life, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. It is designed to acquaint young people, both male and female, with the nature and complexity of law enforcement.

The purpose of the program is build individual character, develop leadership skills, gain an appreciation for community service, develop good citizenship, further the Explorer’s education, encourage the Explorer’s participation in a wide variety of service activities, and enhance the Explorer’s preparation for future roles as citizens, community members, leaders, and future law enforcement officers.

What do Explorers do?
Explorers provide assistance to the Grapevine Police Department and the community with such duties as: clerical assistance, traffic direction, crowd control for events such as parades, football games, Grapefest and Main Street Days. The also help with Crime Prevention Programs. Explorers conduct Post meetings and attend lectures and training in all areas of Law Enforcement.

Explorers participate in many projects and activities such as scenario training, training seminars, an annual academy, Ride-Out Program, Post Meetings, and Competitions against other Explorer Posts. They also participate in various Crime Prevention events such as Neighborhood Crime Watch presentation, McGruff / Redi-Fox / Eddie Eagle safety programs, Parades, Safety Fairs, National Night Out, and Child Fingerprinting. Various social activities have included campouts, day trips to local amusements parks, attending sporting events, and an Annual Awards Ceremony.

What are the qualifications to join?
Both male and female young adults are encouraged to join and must meet the following criteria:

1. A minimum of fifteen (15) years of age, unless they have completed the eighth (8) grade, then the applicant may be fourteen (14) years of age and cannot have reached their twenty-first (21) birthday,

2. Have a high school diploma (or G.E.D. equivalent), or be currently enrolled and attending school.

3. Must maintain at least a “C” (2.0) grade point average in each class enrolled in.

4. Is of sound health and who possesses no deficiency which would deter them from a law enforcement career.

5. Does not have a record of arrest or conviction for criminal offenses Class B misdemeanor penalty group or higher, or some Class C misdemeanor penal law violations, involving moral turpitude.

6. Does not have a habitual record of Class C misdemeanor traffic violations.

7. Has written permission from parents or legal guardian to participate, if under eighteen (18) years of age.

8. No illegal use, past or present, of drugs.

9. Dismissal from any Explorer Post for dishonorable reasons.

10. Termination from any employment for any type of theft or deception.

11. Pass a background investigation and a successful completion of a prescribed probationary period.
