On Saturday, January 16, 2021, Officer Tarshia Akins, Officer Eric Barch and Officer Byron Young responded to a burglary in progress at a local apartment complex.
As officers pulled up, they witnessed a man running across the street. Ofc. Akins ran from her patrol car as the man climbed into the passenger seat of a golf cart. Akins initially thought it was witness ready to show officers where to go, but quickly noticed the driver appeared shaken and scared. She determined the passenger was actually the suspect trying to flee, and ordered him to the ground.
Ofc. Barch used his patrol vehicle to block the golf cart and suspect, then ran over to place the suspect in handcuffs while Ofc. Young began checking the suspect's pockets.
During the investigation, officers determined the suspect broke into a man's car, then ran inside the same man's apartment, where he damaged property and injured the man's wife. The suspect was chased out of the apartment, and was trying to escape when officers arrived.
Only 19 seconds elapsed from the time Officer Akins exited her vehicle, to the time she had the suspect on the ground. Her quick response and understanding of the situation not only stopped the suspect, but also prevented the golf cart driver from potential harm. Excellent response and teamwork!
